Carver House

The Wild Tomato Architecture Awards have recently been announced and Redbox Architects received 3 awards. Carver House won first place in the 'Best Home up to $750k' category and runner up in the 'Best Interior Design' category.  Congratulations Richard!

Located beside the Waimea Estuary, this house has been designed to create a warm contemporary family home. The house is set out on an east - west axis to maximise northern sunlight penetration, which is controlled with louvres and overhangs.

Built in natural materials including vertical cedar, local stone, Lawson's Cypress and copper details it will weather and age gracefully.  Sustainable features such as solar hot water heating, thick insulation, polished concrete floors which store the suns warmth and LED lighting have been used extensively.

The latest project by Switch Lighting was to light the home of Nelson Architect Richard Carver.  Richard had a very good idea of the lighting effects he was after and in consultation with Gerard from Switch Lighting and Redpaths Nelson lighting designer, Sara Cooper, you can see the results below.   Sara worked closely with Richard to select the appropriate fittings to achieve the desired effect.  Richard was a little skeptical with some of the fittings Sara was proposing but her expertise in the field of LED lighting won through in the end.  Richard is very pleased with the lighting and is glad that he trusted Sara's judgment.

Specs on the house:

Floor Area: 195m2

Number of lights: 103

Total Lighting Energy Consumption: 620W

Average energy consumption per fitting: 5.8W

Traditional Lighting Energy Consumption: 4000W

Lighting energy savings: 85%

The following is a testimonial from Richard Carver of Redbox Architects

"Redbox Architects Ltd have worked with Switch Lighting on two recent projects. The most recent was my own new family home in Monaco, Nelson. The lighting was seen as a key element of the design, and was used to accentuate the architecture. We wanted light fittings that were a real feature as well as being energy efficient. The LED lights designed and supplied by Switch Lighting are well designed and excellent quality. I was impressed with the light output and also knowing that the lamps will last 50,000 hours.

We will use Switch Lighting for future projects and would recommend them to others.
